helpItâs little secret that Blu-rays of Pixar films are among the finest demo material you can lay your hands on for a half-decent home cinema set-up. But perhaps Up is the most impressive of all. The film itself is outstanding, and only the second to snare a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards. Telling the story of 78-year old Carl Fredericksen as he embarks, along with boy scout Russell, on a journey he promised his late wife heâd always take, itâs a stunning piece of work. Most memorable is one of the most moving sequences ever committed to animation, which hits you in the filmâs first ten minutes, but thereâs still plenty to keep you enthralled after that. One of the most striking features of Up is just how visually arresting it is. The visuals crackle with exceptional levels of detail here, with a broad palette of colours shining through on the stunning 1080p video transfer. This really is reference-quality work, and just from a home cinema demonstration point of view, Up is a flat-out must buy. But itâs more than that. Itâs also one of the most ambitious, at-times original and boldest films to come out of Hollywood in recent times. When most other animation studios are content to stuff their films with cute animals and star names, Pixar continues to take risks, and while Up isnât a perfect ride, itâs not too far off. helpFind a better third movie in any franchise to date, and youâll really be doing something special. For Toy Story 3 sets a massively high bar for future threequels, and delivers the best family film in some time as it does so. It picks up some time after Toy Story 2, with Andy off to college, leaving the likes of Woody, Buzz and Mr Potato Head with an uncertain future. A series of events soon leave them in the midst of a daycare centre, but things, inevitably, donât turn out quite as expected. To say any more about the story would be to spoil some of the fun, so instead, letâs just say this: Toy Story 3 is a sensational piece of work. It takes a little bit of time to ultimately get going, but when it starts firing on all cylinders, itâs packed with some genuinely incredible action sequences, moments of real suspense, and some terrific comedy, too. Itâs all blended together effortlessly well, and is tied up with an ending thatâll surely melt the hardest of hearts. And, whatâs more, its high definition presentation is reference standard. Animated generally comes out better than anything else when presented in 1080p, and Toy Story 3 more than proves that. It looks, and sounds, staggering. And that this presentational work is attached to such a terrific film makes this, ultimately, one of the finest Blu-rays on the market. Easily recommended. --Jon Fosterheart

Like the handful of other great movie sequels, Toy Story 2 comments on why the first one was so wonderful while finding a fresh angle worthy of a new film. The craze of toy collecting becomes the focus here, as we find out Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) is not only a beloved toy to Andy but also a rare doll from a popular 60s children's show. When a greedy collector takes Woody, Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) launches a rescue mission with Andy's other toys. To say more would be a crime because this is one of the most creative and smile-inducing films since, well, Toy Story. Although the toys look the same as in the 1994 feature, Pixar shows how much technology has advanced: the human characters look more human, backgrounds are superior, and two action sequences that book-end the film are dazzling. And it's a hoot for kids and adults. The film is packed with spoofs, easily accessible in-jokes and inspired voice casting (with newcomer Joan Cusack especially a delight as Cowgirl Jessie). But as the Pixar canon of films illustrates, the filmmakers are storytellers first. Woody's heart-tugging predicament can easily be translated into the eternal debate of living a good life versus living for forever.
